(3 hrs.) (Prerequisite: BIO 311 or permission of instructor) An advanced introductory course in a rapidly advancing field, using experimental design as a tool to elucidate immunological principles. Includes (1) an introduction to the cells and tissues of the immune system; (2) the molecular mechanisms used by the immune system to recognize antigens and the process of activation of the immune system that results from antigen recognition; (3) a description of the means by which the stimulated immune system eliminates foreign molecules, cells and organisms; and (4) an examination of clinical problems that are primarily immunologic.
