(3 hrs.) (Prerequisite: IDS 315 with a C or better.) Study of the history and theory of architecture, furniture, interiors and decorative arts from themid-1800's to present day. Emphasis on the major design periods in Middle and Western Europe and the United States, including the Machine Age, Arts and Crafts, Deco, Innovations and the rise of Modernism. Examination of the significance and application to current design problems, as well as the evolution of the practice and role of the design professional in society. Writing intensive, includes scholarship by and about women and ethnic minorities, plus the history and traditions of the major.
