This course introduces students to the multiple and contested histories of South Africa in the terrain that was their source and their theater. Students visit historical sites and discover their meaning through literature and lectures, theater, music, story telling, and conversation and explore how contemporary history and culture draw on old narrative, historical, musical, and artistic traditions and how the historical identities of places, spaces, and the land have changed through time and with changing interest or perspective.
