The course will explore religious life in Latin American and the Caribbean from the colonial period to the present. Special attention will be given to the interaction between Christianity and the indigenous religious systems of the native people and the African diaspora. Topics may include the role of missionaries, religious syncretism, liberation theologies, church-state relations, religious role in the formation of ethnic and gender identity and the contemporary rise of evangelical and charismatic Christianities.
