A systematic introduction to the work of major figures of 19th and 20th century existentialism. The main themes covered include the different views of the self which emerge in existentialist thought; the relationship of the self to the world, other people, and God; the nature of human freedom, choice, anxiety, commitment, and responsibility. These themes are explored through the work of such thinkers as Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Sartre, Camus, Marcel, Merleau-Ponty, Dostoevski, and Kafka. Prerequisite: PL 1100 or PL 1150.
