This course introduces the student to the historical development of the profession of respiratory care and the evolution of the role of the respiratory therapist. Specific components of the professional role are presented in the context of the Standards and Guidelines for the Profession of Respiratory Care and the Statement of Ethics and Professional Conduct for respiratory therapists. Teaching-learning principles and considerations related to patient/practitioner safety issues are addressed. Theory and psychomotor skills relating to oxygen, aerosol and humidity therapy are practiced in conjunction with beginning clinical decision-making skills. Prerequisite: Admission to the major.
