This course examines the major styles, movements and figures of 20th century art in Europe and America within their social, historical and cultural contexts. It explores the Modernist tradition beginning with the late 19th century, Fauvism, Cubism, Surrealism, Dadaism, etc., and the critique of Modernism formulated by the recent Post-Modern tendencies. The course will trace a variety of issues central to the developments of art in the 20th century and examine how gender, class, race and ethnicity influence artistic output. Writing intensive, required course for studio art, visual art education and art history majors. Offered annually.
