An exploration of 19th century art and the origins of modern art in Europe and America. The course begins with the art of the French Revolution and continues with the discussion of Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. It considers works of individual artists who shaped the character of 19th century art and discusses problems of the social context of art: its historical circumstances, patronage and audience. Offered every three years.
