A survey of the 20th-century literature of Greece, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, Bosnia, Albania, and Romania (in translation), with a focus on the role of literature in modern Balkan politics. Explores "the Balkans"--the cultural entity, the political phenomenon, the ideological construct--from the vantage point of the best modernist and postmodernist texts created in the region. Readings include poetry by Constantine Cavafy, novels by Ivo Andric and Ismail Kadare, short stories by Danilo Kis, read in conjunction with his fathers by choice, Jorge Luis Borges and Bruno Schultz, and films by two of Europe's most acclaimed directors of 1990s, Emir Kusturica and Theo Angelopolus. - V.
