This course will explore the Spanish and Portuguese inquisitions of the early modern era. We will investigate the inquisitions from a variety of perspectives: the history of Christianity and some of its "unauthorized" permutations; the relevant history and religious culture of Judeoconversos, Moriscos, Afroiberians, magical practitioners; normativization and control of sexuality; historical ethnography; and the anthropology and/or sociology of institutions. 3 points
