Examines the origins, trajectories, and effects of social movements, from 18th century Britain to 19th century Iran to late 20th century Argentina, China, and the United States. Focuses on social movements' relation to political parties, the state, and transnational forces and asks whether social movements promote or undermine democratization. Syllabus. - M.
