This course studies the relationship between music and nationalism, from both aesthetic and political perspectives. The broad historical emergence and development of modern nationalism and related themes of race, gender, globalization, and indigneity, are explored through musical case studies focusing on western and non-western, elite, popular, and folk styles and genres.
