Considers what role "race" plays in U.S. culture, politics, economics and foreign policy. Beginning with the origins of racial slavery, examines how, when and whether the subsequent development of racial systems - and challenges to them - shaped historical developments. Through a survey of theories about "race relations" and contemporary discussions about affirmative action, immigration, empire and rights, ponders the possibilities for a "colorblind" society in the United States. - E.
