This course will examine works of Charles Dickens, Charlotte Bronte, Elizabeth Gaskell, George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, and Wilkie Collins with attention to form and style; we will also consider the ways in which these novels reflect Victorian ideas about ambition, desire, and the self, education, work and domesticity, city and country life. - M.
