Examines Toni Morrison's oeuvre and aesthetic in the context of the last 30 years of African American literary criticism and cultural studies. Literary critical movements to be discussed include: black feminist criticism, literary black nationalism, gender studies and queer theory, post-colonialism and the writing of the black diaspora, "racial" writing and the literature of witness, trauma, memory and forgetting. - M.
