Sociohistorical survey of theatrical performance in France from the Middle Ages to the present. Course "texts" include liturgical drama, a variety of plays, ceremonies, sermons, cabaret and puppet theatre, as well as contemporary experimental performance. Discussion to include the politics and economics of French theatre in the broadest sense. - L. Postlewate Prerequisites: Students must have completed the language requirement in French.
