Draws on the perspectives of Bakhtin and other theorists to analyze the logic of five opera performances the class will attend this semester. Productions scrutinized in terms of the forms of communication utilized; the class, status, and gender perspective mobilized; and the specified mechanisms used to engage or distance the audience from them. Performance rather than musicological angle emphasized. Prerequisites: Permission of the instructor required. Enrollment limited to 15 students.
