Examines theories and ethnographies of consumption as well as the political economy of production and consumption. Compares historic and current consumptive practices, compares exchange based economies with post-Fordist economies. Engages the work of Mauss, Marx, Godelier, Baudrillard, Appadurai, and Douglas among others. Prerequisites: Permission of the instructor required. Enrollment limited to 20 students.
