Utilizes both historical and ethnomusicological methodologies to examine sacred and secular musics of slave communities and "free," inside and outside mainstream American culture. Includes studies of blues,gospel, jazz, rhythm & blues, soul, funk, and hip-hop. Analyzes social,cultural, and political issues and movements, and their impact on the development of various musical elements. - W.
