Explores the dynamic interaction between operatic compositions (especially Mozart's Don Giovanni and The Marriage of Figaro) and their subsequent performances, with particular emphasis on the cultural, political, and economic contexts that shape both the original composition and the following reproductions. Critical apparatus includes Abbate and Butler. Prerequisites: Permission of the instructor. Enrollment limited to 15 students. Priority given to upper class anthropology and music majors; students must attend operas outside of class. General Education Requirement: Cultures in Comparison (CUL).
