This course examines Italy's Southern Question from the nineteenth century to the present, investigating the interrelations among cultural representation, geography, and power. Focuses on three writer/artists who produced major representations and theorizations of the Southern Question in three different cultural forms: the fiction Giovanni Verga, the theoretical writings of Antonio Gramsci, and the films of Luchino Visconti. - N.
