Plants are the most conspicuous components of terrestrial ecosystems. In this course, students learn how to observe and describe variation in plant form so one can recognize locally common plant species and determine their scientific names. Students also learn to recognize the characteristic plant communities of the Mid-Hudson region. The course is structured around weekly field trips to local natural areas. Locations are chosen to illustrate the typical plant species and communities of the region, the ecosystem services provided by plants, environmental concerns, and conservation efforts. This course is appropriate for students interested in biology, environmental science, and environmental studies, and anyone wishing to learn more about our natural environment. Mr. Schlessman Two 75-minute periods; one 4.5-hour laboratory. First six weeks of the fall semester. Enrollment strictly limited to 22.
