Description, fundamentals, and engineering features of processes using microbial, plant, or animal cells or their enzymes. Topics include review of biochemistry, review of microbiology, computer simulation, growth, death, aseptic techniques, continuous culture, fermenter design, sterilization, mixed cultures, process scale up, immobilized cells and enzymes, recovery of products, and process economics. Weekly exercises requiring personal computers. Prerequisites/Corequisites: Prerequisite: background in chemical engineering or microbiology. Biochemistry strongly recommended.
