Course Description: First half of a year-long introductory survey of the major monuments of western art from ancient history through the Gothic period. Works of architecture, sculpture and painting are studied with special attention given to the development of style as well as the various techniques and qualities of each medium. The principles, basic methods, and terminology of art historical analysis are introduced. This course may be taken independently of ART 103. The class may visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
