First semester of a five-semester modern laboratory sequence designed to cut across subdisciplinary lines. Quantitative analysis, inorganic synthesis, and modern instrumental techniques, such as ultraviolet, visible, and infrared spectrophotometry, are introduced. One lecture and one laboratory per week.
