Exploration of cultural diversity in South Asia with focus on India; introduction to Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and the Tibetan diaspora. Background survey of the subcontinent's ecology and history provides a framework for examining themes of unity and diversity in contemporary village life, urbanization, family and gender relations, caste and class, religion and ritual, classical and folk arts, cinema, and movements for social change.
