Semester Hours: 3 Fall, Spring This course examines ways that early Christian faith(s) developed in the first century (including views of Jesus' humanity and divinity, portrayals of the Virgin Mary, the relationship of Judaism to Christianity, and the roles of women in the church). Students will read the New Testament alongside non-canonical early Christian writings to develop an appreciation for the diversity of early Christian belief and practice. Students will come to know the content and themes of each of the New Testament writings, to identify different literary portrayals of Jesus, to work with establishing criteria for establishing the historical Jesus, to recognize important differences in early Christian belief, and to be familiar with the development of Christian orthodoxy.
