Semester Hours: 3 Periodically Examination of the relation between language and society with emphasis on Africa, Asia and Latin America. Language as a cognitive system, repository of culture and constructor of reality. Conflict between nationalist languages and former colonial world languages. Language as an indicator of societal identity, group and status. Diglossia. Language planning in government, industry and education. Language attitudes, change and maintenance.
