From the Spanish American War (1898) to the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) there was a period of extraordinary literary and artistic production, often recognized as a second Golden Age in Spanish cultural history. Literature and philosophy, art and cinema, gave Spain some of its most prominent international figures, such as Unamuno, Baroja, García Lorca, Bu uel and Dalí. This course will examine the socio historical conditions that gave birth to the Generations of 1898 and 1927 with particular emphasis on the experimental literary and artistic movements of the time, such as symbolism, impressionism and surrealism.
