What is religion, and how is it part of human experience What shapes have religious ideas and institutions taken in confrontation with the contemporary world How has the phenomenon of alienation contributed to the development of religion and religious responses. How have specific groups that have suffered alienation-Jews, Blacks, American Indians, Rastafarians and women-coped with their situations through the appropriation and modification of religious tradition This course explores these issues as well as religious, social, and existential interpretations of alienation set out by 20thcentury thinkers in the West.
