After a long hiatus, China and India are returning to the center of the international system. These two giants are already amongst the five largest economies in the world despite the presence of widespread poverty. Moreover, both states are nuclear powers with growing military capabilities and regional/global leadership ambitions. This seminar will trace the history of the Sino-Indian rivalry from the Cold War to the present; evaluate the current status of structural economic reforms that are powering their transformations; assess the potential for a "peaceful rise" within the international hierarchy of states; and examine the prospect for sustained bi-lateral economic and security cooperation.
