?he Sixties" is commonly memorialized as a period of radical social, political and cultural change in the United States. This course examines the origins of the various social movements-civil rights, black power, anti-war, women's liberation-which characterized the decade and assesses their impact on the late 20th century American political landscape. By engaging primary materials, sociological studies and autobiography, students are asked to offer critical analysis of the era's many leaders, organizations and ideas. Additionally, this course addresses the character of conservative responses to the egalitarian overtures of Sixties oppositional movements and public policy changes.
