course examines America's pivotal middle period, a period of rising sectional tensions, bloody civil war, and protracted debate about the promise and limits of equality in the United States. Paying close attention to the nation's political structures, economic systems, and social hierarchies, as well as to the lived experience of American in the period, our goals will be to understand how and why the Civil War began, what changes it wrought, whether or not its fundamental conflicts were solved by Reconstruction, and finally, why it continues to have such a profound impact on America's vision of itself even today.
