In a homophobic society that discourages the political organization of sexual minorities by subjecting them to discrimination and violence, one of the few ways in which lesbian and gay people have been able to articulate a consciousness of their identity has been through the publication of works of fiction, although until the 1940s even this mode of expression often was legally suppressed. In this course students read and discuss eight novels that played pivotal roles in the development of a sense of identity and political purpose among gay and lesbian people and which thus helped to define the lesbian and gay communities and movements of today.
