This course looks at the role government plays in stabilizing and destabilizing the macroeconomy by means of its expenditures and taxes, its monetary policy, and its exchange rate policy. The course focuses on the experience of Latin America, where mismanagement, heterodox policy, shock treatment, and the ''Chicago Boys'' have brought the consequences of government policy into sharp relief.
