Definitions and boundaries of 'Asia' abound, just as descriptions about what constitutes the 'West' are many. In this course, we have selected three 'Asian' cultures; Indian, Chinese, and Japanese. We will first address some of the fundamental concepts of these cultures and then trace how these important traditions interacted with the 'West' especially in the 18th to the 20th centuries. We will see that the interactions between the Western powers and these 'Asian' cultures were often turbulent and antagonistic.
