Description:

This course provides an interdiscplinary approach to the civilization and social life of the Anglo Saxon and Celtic realms from the end of Roman Britain to the Norman Conquest-a formative period for later British self-conception and an exemplary instance of blending between Germanic, Celtic, and Mediterranean civilizations. Students work from the perspectives of written and visual evidence-literature, sermons, histories, buildings, manuscripts, and monuments. These materials demonstrate that what has been called a "Dark Age" was not so dark after all. The course benefits students studying English, comparative literature, art history, and European studies.
