People dance and use dance to fulfill many needs, goals and responsibilities. This course surveys world dance forms in terms of the many ways dance functions as an expression of culture and traces dance from its role in folk and religious traditions to its emergence as a theater art. Students study the impulse for dance in several cultures, looking to the practices which gave rise to particular dance forms. The formal properties and evolution of various dance forms are explored.
