This course will examine the many legal issues faced by people living with long term and chronic health issues, including cancer and HIV/AIDS, and the role that law has and will play in developing effective responses. It includes a review of federal laws including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Rehabilitation Act, and Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), as well as New York City and State Laws that protect the rights of the disabled. Topics covered will include discrimination in employment and insurance, public and reasonable accommodations, criminalization of HIV transmission, estate planning issues, the right to refuse treatment, political asylum, public health issues, family law and private causes of action. The course will be collaborative and include guest lecturers who specialize in social and legal issues faced by people living with disabilities.
