N. Khan The concept of nationalism has dominated much of the cultural and political debate in the Arab world since the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. For most of the 20th century, nationalism competed with other forms of identity in the Middle East, and many of the tensions between local and larger categories of identity among Arabs remain unresolved. Through this course students are made aware of the many forms of affiliation that have competed for primary loyalty in the Arab cultural and political sphere, and of the multiple definitions of "nation" that have co-existed.
