M. Hays-Mitchell The second half of the 20th and the early 21st centuries have seen substantial changes in both the organization of the global economy and the role played by particular places within it. This course traces some of the key changes that have taken place, analyzes the processes underlying those processes, and examines their implications for the well-being of place-based populations. Individual units of the course focus on the changing role within the world economy of North America, Western Europe, the transition economies of Eastern Europe and Russia, the so-called East Asian "Miracle Economies," Latin America, and sub-Saharan Africa.
