Rugg Beginning with the loss of the empire in the 19th century and moving through a series of political upheavals, including civil war and fascism, the history of modern Spain has been one of turmoil and continual conflict. The numerous political crises both resulted from and resulted in larger crises of a social, spiritual, and moral nature. Questions of national identity, religious faith, and moral values, as they appear in Spanish literature from the late 19th century to the present day, are the focus of this course. Readings include works of prose, theater, and poetry drawn from a range of literary movements, and emphasis is placed on the socio-historical context and its relationship to literary innovation. Prerequisite: at least four years of secondary-school Spanish, or SPAN 202.
