Students consider the practices, purposes, and audiences of theater and the evolution of dramatic structure in a variety of historical and cultural contexts. In addition to readings in theater history and drama, students examine first-hand accounts of actors, playwrights, critics, and theatergoers of the time. One course in dramatic literature is recommended.
