This course is designed to introduce students to a critical study of American film. The objective is to develop students who are capable of critically engaging film as text, transforming themselves from passive, uncritical viewers to active, critical viewers. Films will be selected in order to introduce students to a wide variety of issues and themes: gender, religion, identity, myth, national consciousness, image, language, and the spatial and temporal structure of narratives. No prerequisite. Offered every spring.
