4 hours This course takes an ethnographic approach to Euro- Western, Asian and African dance forms. Conventions and figures in ballet and modern/contemporary dance are emphasized. Contextualized analysis of the art forms of dance making and doing enliven students' understanding of social, political and historical happenings. This course studies a breadth of representative artists, artworks and practices ranging from the 17th century through the present. Depth is accomplished through students' culminating research projects. (HEPT, Hist, R, W)
