This course presents a comprehensive introduction to Russian folklore and fairy tales. It considers how these narratives permeate religious texts, literature, painting, opera, film, music, political posters, and traditional holidays. Beginning with legends and pagan deities from Russian's pre-Christian period, the course moves to examine subsequent periods - including medieval Orthodox Russia, the nineteenth-century Romantic period, and the era - to investigate how folkloric themes, heroes, and formal attributes are appropriated to serve various political and cultural agendas. The course also engages students with psychoanalytic, feminist, Marxist, and formalist theories. Taught in English with texts in translation. This course is approved for Advent Semester of 2009 only.
