An introduction to Cape Verdes society, from Portugese colony to independent African nation, through a comparative analysis with other Portugese-speaking African states. Broader theoretical questions involve the intersection of race, ethnicity, and politics. Focus is on three major issues: the formation of Crioulo (Creole) society; Portugese colonialism, in relation to the development of national identity, and political independence; and Cape Verde's diaspora in the United States.
