This course will introduce students to the Caribbean, a narrow 2,500 mile island chain, including the Greater Antilles-home to Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico; the Lesser Antilles-collectively called the Virgin Islands; and two smaller island groups-the Bahamas and Curacao. We will examine the histories of these diverse islands, beginning with their central position in European colonial expansion and following their development through current events. (1Lecture: 3 hrs/wk.
