This course is a survey of European art music during the 19th century, with a focus on the historical context and on listening to works in a variety of genres by many of the principal composers of the era including Schubert, Berlioz, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Wagner, Brahms, Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, Verdi, and Dvorák.
