Full course for one semester. This course focuses on Andean society from the rise of the Inka Empire in the 14th century through the Spanish conquest and the establishment of the colonial order in the 1500s. Topics include the political and material organization of the Inka Empire, ideology and religious practice, and the impact of conquest and disease on the indigenous societies of the Andes. We then examine the effects of Spanish attempts to "re-form" indigenous societies by the forcible introduction of Catholicism and Spanish understandings of property and exchange, the imposition of Spanish imperial government, and the dismemberment and reorganization of indigenous polities.
